One dead in yesterday's highway 17 W crash

The driver of the westbound vehicle was located deceased in the burnt vehicle and has not been identified

One person is dead after a fiery collision yesterday afternoon on Highway 17 W. between a transport trailer and a passenger car.

The collision occurred west of North Bay, close to Yellek, about 1:08 p.m. when a westbound motor vehicle collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer causing both vehicles to catch fire.

"The driver of the westbound vehicle was located deceased in the burnt vehicle and has not been identified," said Constable Jennifer Smith. "The driver of the eastbound tractor-trailer was able to escape the fire and suffered minor injuries."

Officers from North Bay OPP along with the fire department and ambulance service responded to the collision.

The OPP's Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) and the Office of the Chief Coroner- Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-FPS) are assisting with this investigation. 

Highway 17 was closed for the time of the investigation and was re-opened around 9:30 p.m.
