City police are confirming this morning that one of their officers needed hospital treatment after contact with a drug suspect.

The incident happened on February 15 at police headquarters.

"One of our Officers was dealing with a person who had been apprehended," Cst. John Schultz told BayToday. "During the search process, the officer was contaminated with a substance that caused disorientation. The officer did receive naloxone (Narcan) as part of first aid treatment. The Officer was transported to the North Bay Regional Health Centre by ambulance and was later released."

Other sources tell BayToday that the victim of the accidental cross-contamination was a highly trained Staff Sgt. and that the substance was Fentanyl.

"Our officers are trained in dealing with unknown substances including the use of safety equipment (goggles, gloves, and hazmat suits), the administering of first aid (including naloxone training) and obtaining subsequent medical treatment," added Shultz.

"At this time we have not confirmed what the substance was that the officer came in contact with. The North Bay Police Service is not releasing the name of the officer at this time."
