The North Bay OPP detachment is concerned with a rise in impaired charges in 2019.

The OPP responded to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 63 in Phelps Township around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night.

When police arrived they began an investigation into the collision. No one was injured but the driver was arrested for impaired driving at the scene.

The driver was brought to the North Police Service for testing by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Officer.

OPP say as a result of the police investigation, Stacey Hunter, age 39, from Kebaowek, Quebec, was charged with Operation While Impaired - Drugs.

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice on January 7, 2020, in North Bay.

The accused was issued a 90-day Automatic Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Staff Sergeant Bill McMullen, Detachment Commander of the North Bay OPP says Sunday's incident makes it 68 drivers charged under criminal impaired driving laws in the North Bay Detachment area in 2019.

"Officers have also issued 29 three-day suspensions for drivers in the warn range of alcohol," said McMullen in a release.

"The public can expect officers to be out at all times during the day and night conducting vehicle stops and RIDE programs. All drivers should anticipate the possibility of being asked to provide a sample of their breath under Mandatory Alcohol Screening laws. Please drive sober!"

In 2018, North Bay OPP only charged 49 drivers.
