North Bay OPP charge three impaired drivers in three days

These incidents mark 23 drivers charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the North Bay Detachment

The North Bay OPP laid three impaired charges in a three-day time period.  

Officers from the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) spot check on Quae-Quae Road in East Ferris Township on July 3 around 5 p.m.   

A vehicle approached the officers and after speaking with the driver, officers arrested the driver for impaired driving. The driver was brought to the North Bay OPP for further testing.   

As a result of the investigation, Ronald Champagne, age 57, of East Ferris, was charged with the following:

  •  Operation While Impaired - Alcohol and Drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC) and
  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC. 

The accused was released on an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay in September.

The North Bay OPP was conducting a RIDE program on the by-pass in North Bay. and around 2 a.m on July 4, a vehicle approached and drove through the checkpoint without stopping.

Officers located the vehicle on McKeown Ave in North Bay where the vehicle stopped for police.  After speaking with the driver, officers arrested the driver for impaired driving.   

As a result of the investigation, Karley Baran, age 22, of East Ferris Township, was charged with Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC.  

The accused was released on an appearance notice to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on August 18, 2020. 

On July 5, 2020, at approximately 11 p.m., in the City of North Bay, officers from the North Bay OPP stopped a vehicle on the by-pass for speeding. 

After speaking to the driver, officers arrested the driver for impaired driving. The driver was brought to North Bay OPP for further tests.   

As a result of a police investigation, William Thorne, age 23, of North Bay was charged with the following:

  •  Operation While Impaired - Alcohol and Drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC,
  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC and
  • Driving While under Suspension (two counts) contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act. 

The accused was released on an appearance notice to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on August 18, 2020. 

The OPP say all vehicles were impounded for seven days and the drivers' licences were subject to a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS).   

These incidents mark 23 drivers charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the North Bay Detachment.
