It's been a bad year for motorists in a hurry.

"North Bay OPP Detachment has charged 13 drivers in 2018 with speeding by 50 or more km/hr," said Staff Sergeant Chris Summersby, Commander of the North Bay OPP Detachment. "Most have been males in their teens and early twenties. Many of these occurrences have taken place during nighttime hours. While traffic is lighter at these times, the excessive speed poses an enormous risk to drivers, passengers and other vehicles on the road."

Over the weekend Powassan OPP officers charged three drivers for "stunt driving."

On Friday night officers were on general patrol on Highway 11 in Callander when a northbound vehicle was caught travelling at over 60 km/h above the posted speed limit. Justin Larose, 22, of Callander, was charged with "Drive Motor Vehicle Perform Stunt - Speeding by 50 or more km/hr.

Then on Saturday at approximately 2:07 a.m., officers were conducting radar enforcement on Highway 11 in Powassan, when a northbound vehicle approached at over 70 km/h above the posted speed limit. A 17-year-old male from Powassan faces the same charge.

Then, Saturday night, officers were on patrol on Highway 11 in Callander, when they conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for travelling at a high rate of speed. A 21-year-old from Thorold, Ontario was charged with Drive Motor Vehicle Perform Stunt - Speeding by 50 or more km/hr.

All three were issued a summons to attend Provincial Offences Court and their driver's licences have been suspended for seven days and their vehicles impounded for seven days.

Upon conviction, stunt drivers face fines from $2,000 to $10,000, six demerit points, up to six months jail, and up to two years licence suspension for a first conviction.

Speeding and other forms of aggressive driving remain a leading cause of fatal motor vehicle collisions.
