North Bay doctor wins national award

Dr. Sharon Goodwin, of North Bay, Senior Vice President of Home and Community Care for the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) is the recipient of the 2020 Nursing Leadership Award from the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL).

"This prestigious national award honours those who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence in patient-centered care and leadership," according to a news release.

Dr. Sharon Goodwin accepted the award at a virtual event hosted by the CCHL yesterday.

She dedicated her award to the health care workers who have been delivering essential front-line care throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.  

“Our world has changed so much in recent months because of COVID 19 and there are many unsung heroes in health care right now, including many front-line caregivers at VON,” said Dr. Goodwin. “I want to dedicate this leadership award to every health care worker and leader at VON as well as healthcare workers across Canada, for their courage, compassion, and self-sacrifice during an uncertain and difficult time.”

Dr. Goodwin is focused on respecting the needs and wants of patients and their families.

"She has led the transformation of home and community care services at VON Canada and oversees the efforts of front-line health care providers. Her many accomplishments include building VON’s Practice, Quality and Risk team, and establishing a quality improvement framework that has instilled best practices across the organization, leading to VON’s achievement of Exemplary Standing through Accreditation Canada for two consecutive cycles," adds the release.
