This past week the first year students in the Bachelor of Science in nursing program at Nipissing University decided to get into the 'Movember' spirit.

For those of you who may not be aware of the Movember fundraiser, it is an event that lasts the duration of November and consists of the growing of moustaches in an effort to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research.

“After taking a look around the room and realizing that, out of a class of about 115 students, only 12 of us were males and less than half of the men were growing any type of facial hair, I decided it was time to get everyone on board… including the faculty,” said Andrew Holland, a first year nursing student.

After making enough moustaches for the students as well as the professors, Holland congregated the class and collected donations, with an added incentive of a draw for gift certificates to Foot and Sole as well as The Fox and the Fiddle.

“Everyone had a great time sporting the fancy fake 'staches' and it was a great way to raise awareness within the class for a disease that will no doubt impact many of us throughout our lives."

Holland also secured donations from The Thomson Team at Assante Wealth Management, Modern Autobody, Mattawa Foodland and the North Bay Norseman Weightlifting Club, as well as several independent sponsors.

In total the class managed to raise over $1,200 for the Canadian Movember Foundation.

“I want to thank all of the students and faculty as well as the businesses for their excitement and participation in this event and I truly hope we can make this an annual occurrence,” added Holland.
