Sargeant Heather Johnson, a 25-year veteran of the North Bay Police Service, was promoted to the rank of staff sargeant today.

The post became vacant with the promotion of Inspector Al Williams to deputy chief, and North Bay Police Chief Paul Cook said Johnson was the right candidate to fill the position.

“Heather, as both Deputy Chief Williams and I spoke about, was on the job when we both came on the job and has worked in virtually every section within in the organization," Cook said.

"She has always excelled and has done an outstanding job, most recently in the courts and we know she is going to do a great job running a shift for us. Certainly she has the respect not only of her peers but also of her supervisors as well.”

And when it comes to women climbing the ranks, Johnson said her promotion helps crack the glass ceiling.

“We’ve come a long way since I started 25 years ago; we still have some work to do but obviously with a small percentage of women in the field you’re not going to see a huge amount coming up in the ranks so it’s going to take some time," Johnson said.

Johnson was happy to have her friends and family gathered to help celebrate the occasion. While pleased with the promotion, Johnson she will need to adjust her work habits.

“Obliviously I'm a little excited but not looking forward to going back to shift work, but you have to take the good with the bad. I’m looking forward to another challenge in my career.”
