A new police unit that was expected to launch in January, is, in fact, operating this week.

A new four-person community response unit which was announced at the October Police Board meeting, was launched this week (November 1 to 7) in conjunction with Crime Prevention Week.

The new police unit which builds on the success of the bike patrol has two officers right now and will become fully staffed with four officers in the new year.

"It will focus on what is being reported and what's being captured by the police service as being the most immediate concern to our community and not necessarily the most important but what is the most immediate concern to the community and how are we going to respond as a police service, and it is also for Callander too," said Scott Tod, North Bay's police chief.

This new unit will operate like a foot patrol in areas such as problem areas like downtown North Bay.

Duties will range from traffic enforcement to foot patrol in a problem area or assisting other officers with additional resources for an area having an identified crime issue.
