North Bay’s Arlene Phillips is another new face that will be running for a position on North Bay City Council this fall.

Phillips, who has been a civil servant for more than 28 years, filed her nomination papers last week.

Phillips has a background in administration and considers herself a union activist.

“I want to make North Bay City Council diverse in terms of members experience and background, so that all of North Bay's citizens are well represented when decisions are being made,” said Phillips in an email to BayToday.ca.

Phillips believes it is a problem that only one woman sits on the current council.

“I want to see North Bay grow and prosper for all our citizens, to raise our families in a community that is active and supportive,” said Phillips.

“One of the things I would I like to improve is how the community is tied to together, such as public transportation, or safer routes to travel.

“I believe in listening and understanding people.  Most importantly I work as a team player, supporting, working together, and finding answers.”

So far 13 candidates have filed their nomination papers with current Councillor Tanya Vrebosch, newcomer Johanne Brousseau and Phillips as the only three female candidates so far.

Current City Councillors who have not filed yet include Chris Mayne, Derek Shogren, George Maroosis, Darryl Vaillancourt, Sheldon Forgette and Mark King.

Of note, no one has yet filed papers to run for Mayor of North Bay.

Nominations for council and school board must be filed by 2 p.m. on nomination day, Friday, July 27.

The election will be held Monday, October 22, Voters will elect mayors, Councillors, school board trustees and all other elected officials in all of the province's municipalities.
