Organizers of a new Cops for Cancer fundraising initiative are anxiously awaiting the final totals.

This year, six local law enforcement agencies teamed up to raise money to go towards paediatric cancer research.

Instead of raising pledges to shave their heads, the officers teamed up with schools to raise money and do an awareness campaign about the deadly disease.

“I think for an inaugural year it went fantastic,” noted North Bay Police Special Constable John Schultz, who helped organize the local event.

The organizations involved included the North Bay city police, OPP, Anishinabek Police Service, Military Police, MNRF enforcement, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

The officers embarked by bike on Friday morning from the North Bay Police headquarters and visited three area schools.

“We did the kick-off at Chippewa High School which fit in with their basketball tournament. They are going to reach out next year and we are going to coordinate more schools that get involved in that. We went to St. Onge and then to Scollard Hall,” he said.

The final tallies are not in yet, but Schultz is expecting close to $3,000 will be raised. Those funds came through various police association initiatives as well as fundraising done at the schools that participated.

Schultz is excited about the inaugural event and he is confident it will grow even bigger next year.
