Free tax clinics will be available this year offered by two organizations in the Nipissing-Timiskaming riding.

In Nipissing, Low Income People of Nipissing (LIPI) and in Temiskaming Shores Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) will both be offering the service.

In both cases,  tax clinic volunteers complete tax and benefit returns for eligible taxpayers. In order to be eligible, you must have a modest income and a simple tax situation.

The Canada Revenue Agency is spending more than $10 million over three years in a new Canada-wide grant program to help organizations offset some of their costs.

“The work these community organizations perform is so important to many constituents in Nipissing-Timiskaming,” says MP Anthony Rota.

LIPI will receive $4,000 and Temiskaming Shores CVITP will receive $2,000.

Clinics in North Bay will begin in March and volunteers will also try to provide financial stability to people with low incomes.

Before this funding, community organizations that run tax clinics covered the costs, which increased as the clinics helped more and more Canadians complete their income tax and benefit returns. Expenses include such things as office stationery, printers, document shredders, and many other incidental expenses.

During the 2019-2020 program year, more than 18,970 volunteers and 3,810 community organizations filed over 467,500 tax returns for individuals across Canada and helped over 407,410 individuals. Since May 2020, an additional 180,000 tax returns have been filed through virtual tax clinics.
