NDA Tournament surprises Food Bank

"I was overwhelmed by the amount of support from advertising and then we decided to use the revenue to give back to the community so I’m really pleased to be able to give as much as we were able to give.”

A partnership between the NDA High School Hockey Tournament and the North Bay Food Bank seems to have been a great fit in 2016.

The 43rd annual hockey tournament which wrapped up on Sunday with a Chippewa victory, didn’t ask for admission during the tournament.  Instead organizers requested fans and family members bring a non-perishable food item to the rink.

The end result, tournament convener Anthony Loreto was able to bring in a $300 cash donation along with 90 pounds of non-perishable food items that were collected at both Memorial Gardens and West Ferris.

However, the big surprise came today when Loreto brought over an additional $1000 donations which came from the support of local tournament advertisers.

Anthony Loreto says it was a real good fit this year.

“Absolutely, I was overwhelmed by the amount of support from advertising and then we decided to use the revenue to give back to the community so I’m really pleased to be able to give as much as we were able to give,” he said.

Amber Livingstone, Food Bank Manager in North Bay, was ecstatic to find out about the bonus cheque.

“We knew they were going to be collecting food for us which was wonderful,” she explained.

“They came in Monday with their food donations and we thought this was awesome, and then receiving a cheque for $1000 is really wonderful and it’s super unexpected plus it’s really helpful this time of year.”

Livingstone says the Food Bank only has a limited budget to go out and purchase additional food items they don’t have in stock so a big cheque like Loreto donated is huge, expecially during the Christmas season.
