As of 1:52 a.m.

Members of the Noëlville detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police remain at the scene of a two vehicle collision that occurred on June 10th, 2006 at 5:55 p.m. on Highway 17, Markstay/Warren, approximately four kilometers west of Markstay.

An eastbound Mercury car carrying five people, crossed the centre line and struck a westbound Pontiac car carrying three people.

The driver and a passenger in the Mercury car were pronounced dead at the scene. All three other passengers in this vehicle remain at in hospital and one is suffering with serious injuries. The driver of the Pontiac was extricated from the vehicle by the Markstay/Warren Fire Department, and is in critical condition at this time. The other two passengers in this car are also at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The highway is anticipated to be closed until 3:00 a.m. while an OPP technical traffic collision investigator and a collision reconstructionist continue their investigation. Traffic, EXCEPT for tractor-trailer units, are being detoured through Park Drive in order to get around the scene.

No names are being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
