Tembec has confirmed to BayToday that at least 20 employees will be laid off at the Tembec Temiscaming Site effective Jun 20th.

“This re-organization entails the elimination of 24 positions in operations and the creation of five new positions in operations,” Dany Gagnon, VP of Operations at the Tembec Temiscaming Site stated in an internal memo released today.

Gagnon added that any retiring workers in the maintenance mechanical department will not be filled and seven electricians will be hired.

“Management and Union will work together to proceed with the applicable collective agreement dispositions to implement this decision,” Gagnon continued in the Tembec internal memo.

The management and the union met on April 18th and then met again today to discuss employment levels at the Quebec border facility along with contracting out issues.

“Management informed the union that reorganizing  the Fibreline team and shipping services at the specialty cellulose plant will become necessary to provide more efficient, competitive, and profitable operations,” Gagnon added in the memo.

Tembec officials say some of those laid off employees will be able to stay on over the summer to fill in for holidays.
