Mild weather brings out family fun

'I only get my son four days a month so we make the most of our time together'

It's not your typical January weather, but the mild spell has seen snowmen and snow forts springing up around the city.

It's a good opportunity for kids and adults to shake off some of that cabin fever that creeps in during the winter.

One effort that caught our eye was this epic effort at 112 Second Ave. W.

For Andrew Lindsay it was a neighbourhood team approach and an opportunity to spend some quality outdoor family time.

"We had a big mound of snow so I put a couple of sheets of plywood on, threw everything on top and with the snow being as packy as it was, we just started filling Rubbermaid totes, and that made our blocks and we just kept going and going. It was hard to pull the plug," he smiled as the kids worked around him.

His son Lucas came up with the idea to turn the pile of snow into an igloo.

"It turned into an igloo, then a snow fort, then a castle,' explained Andrew.

The construction started Friday night and was completed Sunday night.

When BayToday spoke to the group Sunday, it had just come back from a shopping trip to Walmart for supplies.

"We got some additions," chuckled Andrew who was clearly enjoying the exercise. "We got some more Christmas lights and some flags and flagpoles.  We have lights inside so now we'll have lights up top."

This dad says family time like this is a priority for him.

"Absolutely. I only get my son four days a month so we make the most of our time together."

He's an electrician and his work takes him on the road for most of the week.

"I'm out of town a lot over the week but home on weekends so we make the most of our weekends."

His son Lucas is very impressed.

"It's awesome."
