Man charged with manslaughter in Highway 17 crash

A Sudbury man faces a manslaughter charge in connections with a terrible collision May 28 on Highway 17 west of Lively, near Sudbury.

There were four vehicles involved in the collision and the passenger of one of the vehicles, a 71-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people were taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The Sudbury OPP Crime Unit is continuing to investigate the fatal multi-vehicle collision that occurred at approximately 5 p.m. on May 28.

As a result of the investigation Michael Spencer, 31, of Sudbury, was arrested and charged with:

  • Manslaughter, 
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Cause Bodily Harm, (two counts)

Spencer appeared for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury today and a publication ban is now in place.

The investigation is continuing under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Matthews of the Criminal Investigation Branch with assistance from the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Services.
