Making science fun!

'That is our main goal is to show that science can be fun and as you can see with the activities that we did today the kids were having fun'

Vic Fedeli and a handful of community leaders including Mayor Al McDonald and Chamber President Peter Chirico rolled up their sleeves and learned a little bit about the fun behind Science Camp.

Science North is hosting a nine-week summer science camp at One Kids Place in North Bay this summer involving more than 220 local children aged four to 11.

Today the children showed off some mixology experiments, with the main goal of showing science campers that science is something students should not be scared of when the school year begins.

"Our main goal is to show that science can be fun and as you can see with the activities that we did today the kids were having fun and they were able to be hands-on and see the change of colours, see what was happening and by being hands on and having fun there is taking away that stigma from science being boring because it is not. It is really cool, it is very interactive, and that is really what we are trying to show,” stated Josee Bertrand, Staff Scientist from Science North.

Vic Fedeli, the Nipissing MPP and Minister of Finance, was impressed with the children's efforts.

“Efforts to inspire young Northerners are important in helping prepare them for careers in the critical areas of science, technology, engineering, and math,” he stated in a release.

Since 1987 Science North had reached more than 40,000 Northern Ontario Children through the delivery camps like this.

Science North is Northern Ontario’s most popular tourist attraction and an educational resource operating the second- and eighth-largest science centres in Canada.
