It is not ideal, the but North Bay Regional Health Centre is receiving $2,040,000 in funding to help operate the Cedar Lodge, a 14-bed transition unit located at the local hospital.

Paul Heinrich, the NBRHC CEO, says the Cedar Lodge patients are destined for long term care placement.

“As you know the government has been talking about enhancing the number of long term care beds in the province for some time however it takes time to transition and create that new capacity,” explained Heinrich.

“Our organization has essentially created a transitional care unit which serves patients at the right level of care and allows them to get into a more permanent long-term care placement.”

Vic Fedeli, Nipissing MPP, made the announcement at the Regional Health Centre on Thursday morning.  He says the funding is primarily for residents from Lady Isabelle long term care home in Trout Creek, who have been moved to the hospital after the facility closed two years ago.

“This is what I call relief funding that allows the hospital to maintain these Cedar Lodge beds, this ideal situation to handle these family members until we can do something in Trout Creek,” said Fedeli.

Fedeli says he is working on establishing a new long term care facility in Trout Creek.

“I have been working day and night to replace the beds in Trout Creek at Lady Isabelle,” he said.

“The previous government shut Lady Isabelle down two years ago in July and we have been working to find a developer to not only build a 66-bed facility in Trout Creek but a 96-bed and I am literally working non-stop on making sure that we can have the 96 beds in the ground as soon as we possibly can.”
