Mammoth will be taking on the world next week in Atlanta.
The robot of the same name, built by the Near North Student Robotics Initiative, was a huge hit this weekend at the FIRST Robotics Competition Canadian Regionals, held at the Hershey Centre, in Mississauga.

“We placed third in the qualifying rounds of the competition and we got beat out in the finals out of 75 teams, but we won the Motorola Quality Award, for the quality of the design of our robot,” said Todd Willick, co-captain of the NNSRI team, made up of students from Chippewa Secondary School, West Ferris Secondary School, Almaguin Highlands Secondary School and Centennial Elementary School.

“We also won a rookie team all star award and an award for being the highest-seeded rookie team.”

Willick said his team was only one of three which went undefeated in the competition, racking up an 8 and 0 record in the events.

“Those three awards qualified us for the World High School Robotics championships in Atlanta, Georgia, which runs next week from April 15 to 17.”

That doesn’t leave the team much time to raise the $20,000 it will need to finance the trip to the American peach capital.

Still they’re not doing too badly.

“We’ve got about $15,000 raised,” Willick said, “and we’re working on the rest.”
