The Rotaract Club of North Bay-Nipissing announced its fundraising totals for the 2016-17 year, and the totals are impressive.

The local Rotaract Club raised more than $40,000 for charitable organizations within North Bay and area during their 2016-2017 year.

The Club made up of 12 young professionals, run events, volunteer within the community and offer professional mentorship opportunities.

During the 2016-2017 Rotaract year, the club ran a pair of Up the Creek Without a PADDLE events, in support of the PADDLE program.

This was the first time the event fell twice in the same Rotaract year, one in July 2016, raising over $14,000 and the second in June 2017, raising $20,000.

“The PADDLE Program is so grateful for the support of the Rotaract Club of North Bay- Nipissing and their vibrant group of young community leaders," said Megan Johnson, PADDLE Program Coordinator in a release.

"Up the Creek Without a PADDLE is something we all look forward to every year.”

The club also ran a successful Poutine, Pints and Plaid event, in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Bay and District, hosted a book sale in support of Pack Sac Smiles, volunteered at the Capitol Centre, adopted a section of Chippewa Creek and took the ONE Pledge during the 2016-2017 year.

“Our mandate is Service Above Self. We run fundraising events and volunteer to help charitable groups within North Bay and area," said Alex Rogerson, Club President during the 2016-17 year.

"The Rotaract Club is proud to be one of many great service clubs in our area and without the support of the community, we wouldn’t have been able to raise over $40,000. Typically the club raises between $15,000 - $20,000 a year but with two highly successful Up the Creek Without a PADDLE events, we were able to double our normal amount raised,”

The club’s year runs July 1 to June 30 and the club welcomed their incoming president, Valerie Edmunds, at the organization's July 4th meeting.

“I look forward to building off the momentum of last year,” said Edmunds.
