Canadore College and Tourism North Bay have joined in partnership to take the production of ice huts to the next level.

At a press conference at the Canadore Commerce Court campus, officials gave a sneak peak of a new prototype ice hut that is going to be built by Canadore College trades students.

“It’s a joint effort between Tourism North Bay and Canadore and we are going to take our ice shack on the road to promote both the college and the city,” said George Burton, Canadore College President.

“It is a symbiotic relationship, students come to us from all across Canada and around the world and we are in essence selling the city.”

The new hut is similar to the Tourism North Bay ice hut which was introduced last March at the World Women’s Curling Championships.  The new version will go on the road in the next few months to trade show to promote tourism and Canadore College at the same time.

However, on this day, the new ice shack was not unveiled and stayed concealed under a white tarp.  An official reveal will take place in early 2019.

“I know in February we unveil the new ice shack, it is pretty chic,” stated Burton.

“I can tell you that it is an ice shack on steroids with all the luxuries one could imagine and I am going to leave it there. I can say there is not an ice shack anything like this around the world.”

Steve Dreany, the North Bay Tourism Director believes the partnership makes sense.

“When Canadore is out and they are meeting with the people they meet with, they can help us to sell the community and the different experiences in the community,” he said.

“We can do the same thing when we are out selling experiential travel we can also promote Canadore College.”
