It will be a case of which forecast to believe when it comes to local weather conditions this afternoon.

Environment Canada says it will be mainly cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers and risk of a thunderstorm.

However, the Weather Network predicts mainly sunny skies at the time of the eclipse.

Regardless, members of the North Bay Astronomy Club will start setting up their telescopes around noon today for a partial eclipse.

Telescopes will be set up in the grassy area near "The Boat" restaurant.

In North Bay, about 60 per cent of the sun will be covered by the moon.

Astronomy club member, Merlin Clayton says the peak time to watch will be around 2:20.

Clayton can't stress enough the importance of using proper eye protection to prevent permanent damage from happening. The club is handing out ISO approved sunglasses on site free of charge. He says the glasses are made from the same material as the solar filter on his telescope.

Here's the NASA safety page on the subject.

And be careful about taking that eclipse "selfie" as the screen of the phone can reflect the ultraviolet rays back into your eye.

Missed it? A total eclipse will be visible in Toronto August 11th, 2024.
