Report substantiates government’s education agenda
– OSSTF President

“The report from the advocacy group People for Education once again confirms the need for the government to move forward with its education agenda and start implementing the Rozanski recommendations,” said Keith Pacey, President of District 4, Teachers’ Bargaining Unit of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation.

The report addresses both the good and bad news about what has been happening in the secondary schools of Ontario over the past year. “OSSTF supports the report put forth by Annie Kidder and her group,” Pacey said. “The students of Northern Ontario and the Near North have been experiencing the negatives associated with the decrease in school populations and education funding for far too long. Larger class sizes, fewer or no teacher-librarians, fewer custodians and secretaries, few and poor quality textbooks, plus the need to do increased fundraising all have had a negative impact on school morale and ultimately, on student performance,” Pacey added.

Last October, the people of Ontario elected a government with a sound education agenda. Since then, the government has allowed the deficit and a commitment to a taxpayers’ coalition group to derail this agenda. “This report is another challenge to get education moving forward,” said Pacey. “Implement the Rozanski recommendations, correct the funding formula and let’s start providing the students of Ontario with the first class education system that we had prior to the past government,” Pacey challenged.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 50 000 members across Ontario. OSSTF D4 TBU includes about 320 public high school teacher and occasional teachers working for the Near North District School Board in the North Bay, Mattawa, Sturgeon Falls, Almaguin and Parry Sound areas.
