Local Mining company shutting its doors. Sixty-five jobs lost

'To close a factory is a hard but necessary decision, and we realize that it will have implications on our employees'

A high profile local mining technology company will be closing its North Bay doors next summer.

Metso Outotoec, formerly Metso Minerals, located near Canadore's Commerce Court Campus in the industrial park, is restructuring its consumables wears manufacturing operations in North America and discontinuing factory operations in North Bay.

In a release, the company says production will be ramped down by the end of June 2021.

About 65 employees in North Bay will be impacted.

Metso Outotec stated it will utilize the existing North and Central American manufacturing footprint in order to serve customers.

“We are continuously developing our global supply footprint to ensure sustainable and profitable growth," says Sami Takaluoma, President, Consumables business area at Metso Outotec in the release.

"To close a factory is a hard but necessary decision, and we realize that it will have implications on our employees. We will work to support them through the transition.”

The North Bay unit produces rubber and poly-met wear parts used in the mining industry.

The METSO Minerals plant was established in North Bay more than 45 years ago and has employed as many as 114 back in 2015.

Back in 2015, the facility expanded by adding another 16,000 square foot addition to its original 52,000 square foot building.

Metso Ouototec claims to employ more than 15,000 employees worldwide.

Metso Minerals and Outotec completed a merger back in June of 2020.
