A good samaritan puts out a grass fire near the downtown core.

Carmen Anello picked an unusual way to celebrate his birthday.

While driving by the overpass tonight around 8 p.m., he noticed the beginnings of a grass fire on the side of the hill.

Anello then turned off and parked on McIntyre street, tore his jeans jumping over the fence and rushed over to the hill and within less than 10 minutes he stomped out the grass fire.

While he was briskly stomping out the small blaze, another passerby on a bike stopped to help snuff out the fire.

"It was tiring putting it out but glad we did it before it spread," Anello told BayToday.ca.

"I saw someone walking away from the fire so I thought I should stop and check."

By the time the fire crews had arrived, Anello and the other man had the small fire under control.  Although Anello was left with charred shoes, a pair of ripped jeans and blistered fingers.

It was one of three grass fires that were reported in the area including one behind Auntie Jane's on Main Street East.

No word on the cause of the fire.
