A pleasant surprise for local film director and actor Jim Calarco.
A short film he produced back in 2011 came home with 10 awards at the SFAFF festival in Chile recently.
The film won the award for Best Drama Short Film along with these other awards:
- First Audience Award
- Director Honorable Mention In A Short Film
- Lead Actor Honorable Mention In A Short Film - Jim Calarco/One Wish
- Best Lead Actress In A Short Film - Claire Calarco/One Wish
- Young Actress Honorable Mention In A Short Film - Abby Calarco/One Wish
- Production Honorable Mention In A Short Film - Jim & Claire Calarco/One Wish
- Production Honorable Mention In A Short Film - Jim & Claire Calarco/One Wish
- Best Supporting Actress In A Short Film - Brigitte Kingsley/One Wish
The winning production is described as a "short film about a man who, having abandoned his family in 1905, returns home thirty years later expecting to pick up where he left off."
Calarco says he always felt this production did not get the recognition it deserved.
"Our film 'One Wish' did win several awards a few years ago but we were limited in finding festivals that would accept films over 10 minutes in length," explained Calarco.
"As a result, the film was not viewed by a wider audience. Since COVID-19 has delayed the start of our latest film The Mansion, until 2021, I took another look at One Wish and decided to resubmit it to the festival circuit. The SFAFF festival out of Chile that accepts films of any length worldwide seemed to be the perfect venue.
"The fact that we have won in multiple categories is very rewarding and certainly justifies the time and effort our cast and crew spent producing the film."
