North Bay husband and wife duo, Northern Skylight, consisting of Aimee Dayton on vocals, and Sean Dayton playing guitar and adding vocals are enjoying success with the launch of their new album: Acoustic Covers, Vol. 1.

"These songs were recorded at home and made with a purpose," says the duo in a news release. "With so much going on right now, we wanted to do our part to bring some positivity into the world."

Sean told BayToday that the two draw much of their musical inspiration from the surrounding area.

"We absolutely do. With the videos we are doing we wanted to use North Bay as our backdrop. We produced all of our videos in the summer and we mostly just stayed on our porch, but once things started to open up a little we wanted to highlight some other areas so we went in front of Lake Nipissing for one of the songs, 'What a Wonderful World.'

"We wanted to highlight the beauty of North Bay and also to see some goodness and beauty despite all we are going through."

He admits COVID has hit musicians hard, disrupting plans for recording and touring.

"We were actually in the midst of booking a tour in England. We've been there before and were in the midst of booking more dates right around when COVID hit in March and everything started shutting down and cancellations affected our tour. In a lot of ways it's been a challenge for musicians and artists and a lot of people in the entertainment industry. It's just tough not having venues to perform in and this is what we love to do. So we're looking forward to that day when we can do that again."

They say songs like "What a Wonderful World" and "Here Comes the Sun" have become quick favourites. They describe their music as emotive and uplifting acoustic folk/pop. Volume 1 is the first of many they hope to produce and release in the coming months.

The couple has toured across Canada and the UK. However, with most concerts on hold due to the pandemic, they are using video and social media to get their music heard.

Their music videos from this summer have been seen close to 100,000 times.

"It's been a very positive reaction," says Sean. "We set out to come up with songs that would be encouraging and uplifting in the midst of what we are going through. We wanted to just put it out there and hope people would find some encouragement in it."

They say their album, released on October 13, reached Top 5 on iTunes in the Singer/Songwriter genre - alongside notable artists like James Taylor and Norah Jones.
