A fire Monday at a Gatineau Que. SPCA may have taken the lives of animals recently at the North Bay site.

Executive Director Liam Cullin says in a news release, " In June, 25 cats and dogs from the North Bay Humane Society were transferred to the SPCA of Western Quebec in hopes that those animals would find forever homes. We are trying to assess if any animals from North Bay have survived.”

Cullin says the loss of life is deeply felt among local staff and volunteers.

“Our team was saddened to learn about the fire at the shelter in Gatineau,” says Cullin. “We routinely work with Humane Societies and SPCAs throughout Ontario and Quebec by transferring animals to and from partner facilities to give those animals the best opportunity at finding a new home, We have partnered with the team in Gatineau many times and this is a very personal tragedy for us."

In response, the North Bay and District Humane Society is launching an appeal for emergency aid on behalf of the SPCA of Western Quebec.

"The North Bay Humane Society has set up a GoFundMe page for local donations which it hopes will make the transition back to full service easier for the SPCA of Western Quebec. In addition to forwarding public donations, the organization will directly contribute $1,000 to the cause," adds Cullin.

Donations are accepted until July 13.

Those wishing to donate can do so at gofundme.com/helpforgatineau or in person at the North Bay and District Humane Society, 2060 Main Street West.
