Pre-season sales were brisk Saturday at the Laurentian Ski Hill, as Save our Ski Hill campaign organizers held a special registration rally day featuring World Cup Freestyle Champion Steve Omischl and other local celebrities.

Campaign chair Al McDonald said the response couldn’t have been any better.

“Sales have been tremendous, the support has been overwhelming all day, and from today we are half way to the season’s goal," McDonald said.

"Families recognize how important it is to have a facility in town.”

McDonald noted the importance of maintaining facilities like the hill for the city’s youth, not only for recreation issues but also for their health.

“Eighty per cent of our users are young people, and with obesity in our youth in the province being a huge issue we need to maintain these types of resources,” McDonald said.

The committee is dedicated to keeping the hill family-friendly, fun and affordable and so they have maintained last year's seasons pass prices, which are $13 less on average than other hills in the province.

Committee members hope that all families will participate this season and in order to make that a reality the committee is working towards sponsorship for free ski nights, McDonald said.

With the removal of the tube park, space has been made available to develop a terrain park, in light of the successes of local hero Steve Omischl on the World Cup circuit.

“The terrain park will be the best and will help attract skiers from all over the north to develop their skills for free and trick style skiing,” McDonald said.

McDonald praised the work of his committee for their time, dedication and support.

He also commended city officials.

“We’ve had the mayor and councillors giving of their time and that adds credibility to our effort,” states McDonald.

Sales will continue throughout the season.
