The Nipissing Lakers Varsity Women's soccer team's season came to an end on home field.

With a lot on the line, the Nipissing Lakers women’s soccer and Western Mustangs hit the field in OUA semi-final action this afternoon in North Bay.

The winner of the showdown gets not only a trip to the OUA championship game, but also a spot in the USports National Tournament.

After an incredible 90 minutes, plus an extra 30 and into penalty kicks, it was the Mustangs who walked away with the victory and will now play for the league title.

In the first half, the teams traded chances and each had some sustained pressure, but neither could break though.

Nipissing had the better of the opportunities, including a pair of chances that missed by inches, but Western answered with some offensive push of their own.

Despite both teams having their moments, the opening half ended with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

In the second half, it was much of the same as both teams pressed, but neither could find the back of the net.

The game remained scoreless through 90 minutes and headed to extra time – two 15-minute halves.

While it was only 30 minutes of play, it was identical to the first 90.

Chances at both ends, pressure throughout the pitch and a lot of opportunities from both sides, but like regulation time – no goals.

Finally, the game headed to penalty kicks to decide who advances to the OUA Finals and a spot at USports Nationals.

Western was able to capitalize on their shots, scoring on all their chances to edge Nipissing in the end.

With the final results, the Lakers incredible season comes to an end just short of their ultimate goal despite the best season in program history.
