Kidsport wrapped up their March Break activities today at Algonquin High School, and for the past 5 days the students had the opportunity to play sports in a non competitive manner that allowed them to truly have fun.

Kara Rotondo of Kidsport said the week’s aim is to get kids of the couch and introduced to sport when it counts the most.

“What the open gym concept does is it gives them the opportunity to try a few different things whether it Basketball, Volleyball or Badminton, and they find something they like and hopefully by the end of the week.”

Rotondo said she then arms the kids with leisure guides that outline various activities available along with Kidsport applications.

“People don’t always want to say ‘well I can’t afford to play’, but if the application is there it’s the opportunity for them to apply to us and if their kids love the sport the picked up here they’re not going to forget about it, so we want to get them hooked and keep playing.”

The initiative, funded by the Ontario Parks and Recreation Winter Active program, is designed to help address childhood obesity.

“We all know obesity is an epidemic and this is the age group that we need to get going because if they don’t start know now statistics show that they don’t start.”
