OPP were called in to rescue a pair of kayakers at the North Bay Marina Monday after high winds and large waves capsized their boats.

It happened at approximately 4:15 p.m. when two men were kayaking near the marina on Lake Nipissing approximately 150 meters from shore.  The rough waters and large waves caused both kayaks to capsize.

Someone on shore saw a capsized kayak with the paddler in the water and called North Bay OPP.

The Marine Unit arrived and found one kayaker who didn't need help, but asked officers to check on his companion.  The second man was rescued 100 meters further away.

He was exhausted due to the large waves and was pulled from the water by police.

One kayaker is 51 years old from Kirkland, Quebec, and the other is 23 years old from North Bay.

Neither were injured or needed medical attention.

Both men were wearing life jackets which police credit for the positive outcome.

Police caution it is important to never underestimate the water and always wear a life jacket regardless of your skill with vessels or swimming.
