The Town of Mattawa has been celebrating their 125th anniversary in style with the help of a $75,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The Honourable Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing, joined OTF representative Mary Lou Arrowsmith to congratulate the town at the annual Mattawa Voyageur Days launch.

“I am pleased that the Trillium Foundation through its $75,000 grant has allowed the Town of Mattawa to host a year of celebrations,” said Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing.

In recognition of the Town’s 125th Anniversary, the Foundation was awarded a grant to host a series of events throughout 2009 commemorating the Town of Mattawa’s 125th year anniversary. These festivities will celebrate the community’s rich and diverse culture and honour its achievements. It is expected that 80,000 participants will attend events this year, to commemorate the anniversary.

“The Corporation of the Town of Mattawa, celebrating its 125th Anniversary in 2009, is very pleased to receive funding assistance from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The funding will assist the Corporation in partnership with a number of community organizations in hosting activities and events all year long," said Dean Backer, Mayor of Mattawa.

The Mattawa 125 Committee is comprised of nine community organizations, lead by the Town of Mattawa, helping to hold events. They are hosting over 50 special events to recognize this special time in the community’s history.
