North Bay’s Dave Innes did not capture a second medal but he did have a creative way to say hello to his mom during the powerlifting competition on Tuesday during the Invictus Games.

Innes wrote “Hi Mom” on the bottom of his shoes during the powerlifting event and it was picked up by the Invictus camera crews during the online broadcast.

“I won’t medal in powerlifting,” stated Innes via his Invictus Games Facebook page.

“Flight 2 in my weight class all lifted more than I did. I’m happy with my lifts and there is always 2020 Paralympics!

“And I got to say ‘Hi Mom’ to a million viewers,” Innes exclaimed.

It was a special hello for Innes, as his mother is currently in hospital recovering from a broken leg.

Innes, who was paralyzed from the ribs down in a training accident at CFB Gagetown more than 25 years ago, continues to be amazed about being part of this amazing international competition.

“I can’t even explain how much I love this adventure,” stated Innes.

“The comradery of not only my own team but the other nations as well. Athletes cheering each other on at the powerlifting venue no matter what country you are from. Seeing everyone accomplish their lifts. The tears, the emotions, and the triumphs.”

Innes, who won Invictus Games silver in the one-minute rowing event on Monday, says to be among such amazing athletes is an honour and a privilege.

“I’m so in awe of all of these amazing warriors never quitting, never giving up,” he said.

“I wish all the athletes here this week recovery, rehabilitation, closure, and life longevity.”

Innes’ individual events are complete. However, he is expected to compete in the wheelchair basketball competition which starts on Friday.

Innes also had a fourth-place finish in the men’s IR2 four-minute endurance indoor rowing event on Monday.
