Ice from passing van smashes windshield of North Bay man

'Luckily I was in a big heavy truck, not a car'

Darren Culham of North Bay had quite a scare yesterday.

He was driving on a highway in North Bay when a piece of ice, about 7ft x 2ft came off a cube van heading the opposite way, crashed into his windshield showering him in shattered glass. He was going about 90 km/h at the time.

"Luckily I was in a big heavy truck, not a car," Culham said in a Facebook post."If this would have hit a car it would have been devastating to the people inside the vehicle and most likely have caused a major accident (heavy trafffic at the time).

"My point. Make sure that you take the time to remove snow/ice from your vehicle no matter how big of a vehicle you have. Don’t give me the excuse that you can’t get the top of the vehicle clean because this is what can happen."

Culham says he's ok.

"They happened to stop where I pulled off the road waiting for a tow truck. I don’t forget vehicles. I took a picture of their plate."

Police say the issue is becoming a major safety problem.
