A local hunter man has been fined for shooting a firearm across a highway.

Philippe Giroux of River Valley, west of North Bay, pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm across the travelled portion of a roadway and was fined $2,000. Giroux was also banned from hunting deer for one year.

Court heard that conservation officers received a complaint from a member of the public regarding unsafe hunting in the Field area.

Officers investigated and found that on November 12, 2015, Giroux stopped his vehicle along Highway 539 in West Nipissing, and shot at a deer from the shoulder of the highway with a high-powered rifle. He shot parallel to the highway and across an inside curve.

Justice of the Peace Michael Kitlar heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sturgeon Falls, on September 19, 2016.

The public is reminded that laws regarding the use of firearms are in place for public safety. It is illegal to discharge a firearm from, down or across a public road when hunting.
