That human remains case we told you about this week has taken an unusual turn.

The sole suspect in the case has died in police custody.

On January 15, shortly before 8 p.m., OPP officers were called to a snowmobile trail off Nobel Road in McDougall Township just north of Parry Sound.

Upon arrival at the scene, the officers found human remains which were taken to the Office of the Chief Coroner in Toronto where a forensic post mortem examination was completed.

Constable Kyle Ney told BayToday that he could not confirm if the remains had been identified.

"They are still studying the results. Obviously, it's still early in that regard. I'm not confirming that we know who it is."

Ney did however, confirm the 34-year-old male suspect from Mississauga, who had been arrested and charged, died in police custody. The suspect's name has not been released, and Ney says if the name of the dead suspect is released, it would be in a future OPP update.

Usually when a prisoner dies in police custody the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) looks into it but Ney says, not so far.

"There is no indication that the SIU is involved in this at this point,"

Ney said he could not say how the suspect died.

"The OPP is always endeavouring to complete thorough investigations, especially in major cases. The direction would be to continue that. These ones are fairly complex. Even in light of the information, we still complete the investigation so it will take some time.

"There is no indication that we are seeking any other suspects."

Detectives of the West Parry Sound OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Mark Zulinski of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) are continuing this ongoing investigation.

Any person with information regarding this incident should immediately contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police authority.
