Horse pull day at Powassan Fall Fair (Five photos)

Today, on a dry field a team of horses will pull about 8-9 thousand pounds

There were 16 teams of horses competing at the 124th Powassan Fall Fair today (Saturday), half in heavy and half in the light division.

The winner is decided by which team can pull the most weight 15 feet using two chains. Another 1,000lbs is added each turn until every team is out. Last horse standing wins.

Today, on a dry field a team of horses will pull about 8-9 thousand pounds but on a wet field over 14,000lbs is not uncommon.

Owners practice hard to build the horse's strength. And it's not a cheap sport.

A team of good horses can be worth north of $50,000.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is demolition derby day at the Powassan fall fair.
