The first-ever Hometown Run for Youth Special Olympics is coming to North Bay this spring.

The Hometown Run for Youth Special Olympics features a 10km and 5km run as well as a 1km family fun run/walk and is scheduled for May 7, 2023.

Lisa O'Kane is the race co-director and she believes the new event makes a lot of sense.

"The Home Town Run for Youth Special Olympics is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to support our amazing Special Olympic youth athletes and at the same time get a bit of exercise," said O'Kane in a media release.

She hopes this is the first of many events like this.

"We hope this inaugural event becomes a mainstay event in our community for years to come," she added.

"Please join us on May 7, 2023 as a runner or walker and consider donating to our athletes so we can continue to have rich programs that support healthy active living. And on behalf of our Special Olympic Youth Athletes, we thank you!"

The funds raised from this event will help sponsor a local Special Olympics Athlete so their fees and registration costs can be covered throughout the upcoming season.
