The City of North Bay and the Ministry of Transportation say the Highway 11/17 pedestrian bridge has been re-opened.

"The MTO has advised that the pathway is open for use," Gord Young, communications officer with the City of North Bay stated Wednesday.

"Temporary repairs have been completed and permanent repairs will be completed when material is available."

The bridge had been closed since Sunday morning due to a fire which was started by squatters trying to keep warm.

The City of North Bay released a statement regarding the incident on Monday afternoon.

"The multi-use pedestrian crossing, which is to be used only as a pedestrian and bicycle path to cross Highway 11/17 at Frost Steet/Meighen Street, has been temporarily closed due to a small fire that occurred inside the structure during the weekend," the release stated.

"The North Bay Fire and Emergency Services responded and the Ministry of Transportation and the North Bay Police Service has been notified. North Bay Fire and Emergency Services have indicated that two individuals started the fire for warmth. The pedestrian crossing will remain closed until further notice."

The bridge which connects Meighen Street to Chippewa Street is used by students as a crossing to Chippewa, Saint Anges and Alliance schools.
