'Highly intoxicated person' walking down highway gets arrested 'for their own safety'

Nipissing West OPP report a strange incident yesterday evening.

At 9:22 p.m. officers investigated a report of an intoxicated person walking on Highway 575, in West Nipissing.   

"Police located the highly intoxicated person on the highway and attempted to place that person under arrest for their own safety," says Constable Robert Lewis.

"The intoxicated person ran toward a nearby vehicle and began damaging the vehicle."

Matthew Gauvin, 24, from New Liskeard, was arrested is charged with:

  • Resist peace officer
  • Mischief under $5,000
  • Being intoxicated in a public place

Gauvin was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on December 2, in West Nipissing.
