High school musical theatre returns with Charlie Brown classic

'I can’t wait. I’ve forgotten how it feels to have a live audience, to be honest'

After a few years of sitting in the wings, high school musical theatre is back on stage with the West Ferris Secondary School’s drama troupe Trojan Theatre.

The Company is gearing up to present the long-time favourite Broadway musical, “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown!” in front of a live audience.

After performing virtual plays over the past few years, the drama club will be presenting “Charlie Brown” from May 26th through to the 28th at the school’s auditorium.

The musical follows the entire Peanuts gang exploring life's great questions as they play baseball, struggle with homework, sing songs, swoon over their crushes, and celebrate the joy of friendship.

All of Charles Schultz's characters are presented on stage, including Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, Peppermint Patty, Marcie and good ‘ol Charlie Brown. The

musical will appeal to all ages.

“We had veteran musical theatre students who previously had been performing musicals every year with Toros and Dreamcoat Theatre, and then nothing for the past two years," said director/teacher Allan MacAskill. "So they are over the moon to be back on stage in front of a live audience,”

“I can’t wait. I’ve forgotten how it feels to have a live audience, to be honest,” says student James Devuono, who plays Snoopy in the production. “I’ve done lots of musicals over the years since grade four, and I wanted to do at least one last high school show before I graduate.”

The production has been rehearsing since March and is gearing up for an opening night on May 26th.

“I’m a little nervous because it’s been so long, but I feel after a few moments the nervousness will go away and it’ll feel like old times,” explained Ian McCormack who plays Linus.

A professional Jazz band from Toronto, the Kervin Jazz Band, including former North Bay brothers John and Bill, will add the music.

The production runs from Thursday, May 26th to Saturday, May 28th at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or online.
