'Heated argument' leaves woman stranded in the bush (VIDEO)

Two female friends left on June 17, from Duke Lake, in the Gogama area, to go on a five-day canoe trip on the Spanish River

OPP say a 'heated argument' between two women on a canoe trip resulted in one being stranded in deep bush near Espanola.

Shortly after midnight on June 21, Espanola OPP received a report of a stranded person on the Spanish River, Dennie Township.

Turns out that two female friends left on June 17, from Duke Lake, in the Gogama area, to go on a five-day canoe trip on the Spanish River.

But trouble was brewing.

"Toward the end of the trip, a heated argument ensued between the two which resulted in one woman leaving in the canoe and the other being stranded on shore with the tent and limited supplies," said Constable Michelle Coulombe.

The area is too remote for cell service so the woman inflated her sleeping pad and used it to continue travelling down the river.

Before leaving, she wrote the distress signal ''SOS'' in the sand, and once she reached an area with a weak cell signal, she contacted her spouse for help and was able to provide the location coordinates.

The 35-year-old woman from Sudbury, was finally found at 11:20 a.m. and rescued from the remote area.

She was taken to the Sudbury Airport where she was assessed by Sudbury Emergency Services. Other than suffering from insect bites, she was in good health.

OPP Aviation Services, OPP Emergency Response Team, and Park Rangers helped with the rescue. Police say the friend may face charges.
