Those frost warnings less than two weeks ago seem like a distant memory as a heatwave has gripped the area over the last few days.

Relief is in sight, however, as cooler temperatures are expected to move in this evening.

A heat warning continues in effect for:

  • North Bay - Powassan - Mattawa
  • West Nipissing - French River
  • Greater Sudbury and vicinity
  • Temiskaming Shores - Temagami
  • Kirkland Lake - Englehart

A warm and increasingly humid airmass will continue streaming into the regions from the south.

Borderline heat warning criteria is expected to be reached again today with a mix of sun and cloud. High 29. Humidex 37. UV index 9 or very high.

A cold front will move through to bring an end to the heat this evening. Expect rain tomorrow.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, and people working or exercising outdoors.

Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and the worsening of some health conditions.

Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.

Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are cool and drinking water

Seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, swimming pool, shower or bath, or air-conditioned spot like a public building.

Shade yourself with an umbrella or a wide-brimmed hat.
