The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit has revealed how they are getting rid of vaccines that are unused at their clinics around the region.

Andrea McLellan, Director of COVID-19 Immunization Strategy, touched on the issue locally while other regions such as the Simcoe-Muskoka District Health Unit have started up a Standby list call-in phone line.

"We have implemented a process where we are reaching out to organizations that have employees within the priority groups we are focussing our clinics on," explained McLellan during Thursday's online media conference.

"If we anticipate having vaccine left at the end of a clinic they would receive a call about an hour before the end of a clinic asking them to prepare a list of people who would be able to come to the clinic. They would then be notified toward the end of the clinic, how many individuals we require, and those individuals would be directed to attend a clinic and receive their vaccine."

A standby list is now available for same-day COVID-19 vaccination appointments in Simcoe Muskoka for those who are eligible and can get to an appointment within 45 minutes of receiving a call.

The Simcoe-Muskoka District Health Unit says it launched the new call line as a new way to use up any remaining vaccine doses at the end of each clinic day and is created new each day.
