Halloween enthusiasts embracing pop culture

'It seems like adults kind of go either which way, they build something super intense that’s really elaborate, have a lot of accessories and things, or they go for something just to get a cheap laugh'

With Halloween slowly approaching, more and more people are starting to think about what kind of costume they should wear for the night full of tricks and treats. For the coolest and creepiest costumes, most people go to Value Village.

Some of the popular costumes this year include clowns, superheroes, Paw Patrol, Monster high, and yes, a variety of food.

“The trend [in costumes] still comes from pop-culture stuff,” says Mathieu Mayotte, retail sales manager at Value Village.

“The clown stuff all deviates from IT being the big horror movie right now, superhero stuff just deviates from the same thing… we’ve got the Justice League happening soon, so people are kind of anticipating that.”

The kind of costumes that kids will want to dress up in for the big night can usually be influenced by their favorite TV shows.

“Paw Patrol is something that there’ll be a lot of, and it’s a pretty easy costume to build as well, and then Monster High which we were just doing two seconds ago.”

It seems that for adults, the kind of costume they wear falls into one of two categories.

“It seems like adults kind of go either which way, they build something super intense that’s really elaborate, have a lot of accessories and things, or they go for something just to get a cheap laugh,” says Mayotte.

“Game of Thrones was super popular, all the really keen Game of Thrones people came out and bought the really nice expensive stuff right off the get-go and then kind of slowed down.”

With funny food costumes being popular, we might see a lot of Pickle costumes, or more specifically Pickle Rick, due to the popularity of the cartoon Rick and Morty.

Mayotte believes another popular costume might be horses, or any number of animals, inspired by the popular Netflix cartoon Bojack Horseman which released its fourth season in September.

Still haven’t gotten your costume? Not to worry! Mathieu shared some helpful tips for deciding what you want to be this spooky holiday: “The main thing that we usually tell people is to try to stick to one of the three main themes. So either be Scary, be funny, or dress to a specific target, like a specific character or story.”

Another tip Mathieu shared for a successful costume is to add accessories.

“Adding wigs, jewelry, extra makeup, and weapons, depending on the character you’re going for, will make your costume really stand out and seem more unique.”

For those looking for a safe Halloween experience, both the North Bay Fire Department and Northgate Shopping Centre provide treats for youngsters in a controlled environment.
