Canadore is marking the Year of the Snake at its Chinese New Year celebration later today.

Over 120 international students will commemorate China’s most important holiday at the King’s Buffet Friday evening with delicious food, traditional well-wishes and karaoke entertainment.

“The Lunar New Year is one of the most significant celebrations in the Chinese culture,” said Richard Peters, Vice-President, Finance and Corporate. “Back home this is a time for families to cleanse themselves of the old and usher in the new. Although our students are bringing new elements into this age-old tradition while they are here in North Bay, we are pleased to be celebrating the holiday’s roots and meaning together.”

Canadore recruits students from all over the world. The College’s international enrolment has grown over the past two years, having ushered in approximately 125 students this year from Botswana, Brazil, Britain, China, India, Italy, Jamaica, Korea, Nigeria, Russia, Sweden and Tobago to attend classes.

The snake is one of the 12-year cycles of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac and is related to the Chinese calendar. The snake is also a symbol of wealth and power.

Gung Hay Fat Choy: Best wishes and congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year!
