The Grinch tried to steal Darlene Bates’s Christmas, but the Oakwood Avenue woman says she’s not going to let it happen.
On Monday night thieves literally ripped off lights, wreaths, garlands and bows from the front of the house Bates shares with her husband Bill.
“I hope they enjoy them because I’m not going to enjoy them,” Bates said.
“This is very upsetting. I can’t believe they would do something like that.”
Bates thinks the theft occurred at about 9 p.m. Monday, although it was discovered until 1 a.m. when Bill went downstairs for a glass of water.
“It’s got to be college kids or teenagers because the kids around here are younger and they’re all in bed by around 8:30,” Darlene said.
It’s the first time in five years living on Oakwood that something like this has happened, Bates added.
She doesn’t even have anything to remember the display either, she said, since she hadn’t taken any pictures.
Bates said she spent about $150 purchasing the Christmas lights and decorations.
“I hope they enjoy them,” Bates said, “because I won’t be able to.”
She’s undaunted though.
Bates said she’s going to buy new lights and string them up but with a video camera guarding them.
