This could be good news if you're itching to get your sled out, or bad news if you're travelling but Environment Canada says a big winter storm is coming our way.

It's issued a special weather statement, that could turn into a warning, for:

  • North Bay - Powassan - Mattawa
  • West Nipissing - French River
  • Greater Sudbury and vicinity
  • South River - Burk's Falls
  • Bayfield Inlet - Dunchurch
  • Huntsville - Baysville
  • Town of Parry Sound - Rosseau - Killbear Park
  • Témiscaming area
  • Temiskaming Shores - Temagami
  • Ville-Marie area
  • Kirkland Lake - Englehart

The winter storm is expected Sunday afternoon through Monday.

Hazards:

  • Heavy snow. Total snowfall accumulations of 10 to 25 cm.
  • Strong winds with gusts of 60 to 70 km/h.
  • Risk of freezing rain for some areas.
  • Heavy rain for some areas.

Hazardous travel conditions are expected.

A strengthening low-pressure system is expected to track east across the Great Lakes Sunday through Monday. There remains some uncertainty in the track of this low-pressure system and as a result, the snowfall amounts and areas affected by freezing rain and heavy rain could change.

At this time, areas north and west of Sudbury are expected to receive mainly snow, whereas areas east and south of Sudbury could see a wintry mix of precipitation. Warnings will be issued as the event draws nearer.

The Saturday forecast calls for about 2 cm of snow ending late in the morning then clearing. High minus 4

Sunday, snow with a high of minus 3.

Monday, snow with a high minus 2.

If we do get the upper end of snowfall it will set a record. The present mark is 15.2 cm set in 1959.
